Hi hope I'm not being too cheeky posting on your forum but it seems the best place for the advice I'm looking for, (I've tried everywhere else:sad:). I'm a full time wheelchair user and I've just bought a set of Schwalbe tyres which run at up to 145psi. The manufacturers recommend around 100 - 130psi. I've managed to get them as high as 110psi but the valve came away from the inner tubes (both!) at this pressure. I've replaced both tubes but now I'm a bit wary about putting too much pressure in them so have only gone as far as 90psi. My question is, is this a normal sort of pressure for inner tubes,(presta valves)? If I run them at any less than 90psi they're hard to push and squeal on hardwood floors, very wearing:angry:. Again, hope you don't mind my butting in:blush:

No worries. Inner tubes should be able to handle those sorts of pressures without any bother. You just need to get some decent quality ones! The standard does vary and there are some real rubbish ones around.

Any 'branded' ones should be fine. Michelin are as good as any and a bike shop with a decent customer base will have enough turnover of stock to ensure you don't get any time expired crap.

Hope you have better luck!

The only other thing to check is that the hole through your wheel rims is okay. Are there any sharp edges, or are they the big holes for shraeder valves without the rubber reducer fitted? If you're uncertain, have the mechanic at the bike shop take a look.

Thanks!;)

I worked as a caretaker at a hospital in Stockholm several years ago, and learned a bit about different tyre pressures; but without wanting to go into all the technicalities, I thought it better to find (just by googling the right combination of words) a site (in this case, a forum) relevant to the matter in hand.

Are you that spooky caretaker character that appears in Scooby Doo cartoons all the time?:biggrin:

Thanks

Many thanks for the replies. Tim, I've had a look and it seems I don't have the reducers on my rims, something to sort out asap. Dayvo, that thread is excellent, I will study all the info. It's amazing how many different options are available even for wheelchairs! I'm now going to look for a good quality pump with gauge to see if I can make life a bit easier in that respect;). Thanks again for all your help, seoras
