I've got a Crank Brothers Speed Lever, which is plastic, but it's very clever. It clips onto the axle of the wheel after telescoping out, which facilitates easy spinning round, and doesn't need any other levers, just the one thing. It's also got a flipside which helps you to put the tyre back on as well.

never use metal. shouldn't be any need to. they can scratch the rim very easily.
judicious use of the thumb in conjunction with a plastic one is ime enough to remove and seat the stuubbornest beads.

looks good as it's thick where it's most likely to snap.

I have that Crank Brothers lever and, whilst it does work, I prefer ordinary plastic levers!

But maybe I'm just used to them and don't really find a need to use anything else.

Those nice Park Tools ones are the ones i like. They are strong, and i only use one to get tyres off. And you can use them to put the tyre back on aswell.
Someone in the cycle club has one which clips over the tyre when you go to put the tyre back on, and you lever it and the tyre gets back on. Its pretty good and works well. Aparently you can get them from Evans but i havent looked.

Plastic.

Picked up a handful at a cyclejumble for 10p each.

They should come free from a LBS with a new bike.

I've also got some antique metal levers which come in useful for stirring tea.

You can pick up modern metal levers from the tea shop for FREE !

a) they don't snap, and  they don't bend, both of which plastic levers do when faced with a difficult tyre.

As for rim damage, it's theoretically possible, but I've not managed to do it in 20 years of puncture mending.
