Tyre hernia

I have a little bulge on my front tyre, not quite on the sidewall but where the sidewall meets the thick rubber that makes contact with the road.

Last time I had this on the rear tyre I left it, and had a couple of punctures, the last of which was the innertube split where the now-hole in the tyre was.

So is there anything I can do to prevent this? I'm thinking I could put something solid-but-flexible on the inside of the tyre at that point, to support the tube and keep everything going. Or is it time to replace the tyre? There is no hole in the tyre at the moment, but there will be if I keep riding on it.

It is a Continental GP4Seasons 700-28, and probably done 2500+ miles since October last year.

A tyre boot would be a temporary solution, they stick to the inside of the tyre. They're usually for emergencies on the road designed to get you home. Time for a new tyre I think.

So putting a bit of old tyre on the inside of it isn't really an option? What's the worst that could happen (seriously)?

That's what I and others carry as an emergency tyre boot.

It's suitable as a get-you-home by the shortest available route measure.

The tyre needs replacing or you'll suffer the fate you had last time. Make sure you're not going above the pressure stamped on the tyre - possible cause of the problem. Otherwise try a different sort of tyre.

The worst - probably a loud bang while you're doing 30mph down a moderate hill with a 40 tonne lorry tailgating you.

With it being a front tyre I'd replace the tyre as soon as possible, I wouldn't be as bothered if it was the back but would want to change it as soon as I could, I carry an old piece of tyre in my saddle bag to use as a tyre boot but for emergencies only.

I have a new tyre in my pannier in case it punctures today, and will be building a new wheel this weekend so can put the new tyre on that.

With what I've spent over the past 6 months I could have bought a brand new bike to the same spec as my current one....... 8-)

Cheers,
