Thanks all, looks like I will have to put my hand in my pocket and upgrade his tyres. I thought it would be cheaper once they left home.

Oaf on a Bike
I'm suprised people are saying that extra weight doesnt make normal punctures more likely. Im not sure if it was Sheldon Brown but I read that more weight means more pressure applied to the road and pushing any shards/flints through, especially combined with a need to run a higher tyre pressure. Anecdotally my experiences riding at over 19 stone compared to my friends at 9-12 stone one on same bike/tyres is that I was always many times more likely to puncture from running through broken glass until switching to Marathon+.

For starters as suggested just try upping the pressure until you rid the pinch punctures, get a track pump with a guage if you dont already have one

Try some Durano Plus from Schwalbe 28mm if there is room to fit, initial rear pressure would be 113psi and front 90 respectively, assuming no luggage or plus 1 psi for every 1kg in wt of gear on or over the rear wheel.

Don't worry about blow outs as if tyres are tested they are blown to 200% of max pressure before failures occur, similarly tyre pressure depends on maximum loading, so if the load goes up, pressure goes up so that the same amount of give (when you hit a pot hole for instance)to ensure the same shock absorbing response.

Atm, due to weight (20st 4lb - down from 21st when I got my new bike 4 weeks ago), I am running Marathons at max pressure and this is the only thing preventing multiple wheel buckles, wheel rim dings and pinch flats, due to the potholes etc
