Tyre Direction

I know this my be a dumb question, but when changing a tyre (especially for a different tread pattern) is there a way of telling which way round the tyre goes on. I know on a lot of tyres its obvious, but what about ones that are not so obvious.

There will be a direction arrow on the sidewall showing the correct rotation. If there isn't one it doesn't matter which way it goes.

Someone will probably be along shortly to say it doesn't matter anyway.
