Whilst checking my tyres I noticed this worryingly large gash on the front tyre. Is it large enough to render the bike unsafe or will it last long enough for my replacement tyres to arrive in the middle of next week. I was planning on doing a club ride tomorrow morning.

If that's the tube you can see through the split it's a no-no.

Ah, good old Gatorskins  ( i think) , i use them, love them, but they are prone to that kind of damage. I'd bin that one. (gatorskin or other)

Nope, Continental GP4000S. Only put them on in the autumn. Previous tyres have lasted about a year before replacement. I've got some Durano Plus on order which should hopefully be somewhat more robust.

If you want to ride tomorrow, swap it to the back with a tyre boot in it. That ought to do you a few hundred miles.

  I knew i'd seen them before...its that 'scolloped' pattern, similar to gators.

Looks like that tyre's dead unfortunately.

Silly question and you've probably already thought of it but do you have an old tyre lying around for tomorrow (like whatever it was you replaced in the autumn or the cheapies they put on when new)?

When they arrive can you do a quick comparative review of them please?

Unfortunately not, I took the old tyres to the tip last weekend (sods law innit!!).

I will have to make do with the mountain bike and ride with a slower group.

I may keep the rear tyre as a spare, it is a folding tyre so may do for an emergency "get home" tyre should the worst happen when I am a long way from home.

Well, firstly, can't fault Wiggle's service. Ordered them Saturday evening, they arrived Tuesday morning plus I got a complementary energy gel sachet.

Tyres were a little easier to get on the rims than the conti's were. Have used them for a couple of hundred miles now, and can't tell any difference in the rolling resistance, and there is no significant change in my average speeds going too and from work (19 mile round trip on country lanes). Have not tried them in the wet due to lack of rain.

Too early to tell how puncture resistant they are. I'm hoping to get at least six months of puncture free use out of them.

That's severe tyre damage that is - whatever caused it would probably have done the same thing to any tyre. I've got the same Continental on the front of my second bike and never had a problem.
