Tyre choice for BMW 3 series, and opinions on blackcircles.com?

Hankooks not so well know over here but are a huge South Korean manufacturer of quality boots, OE on Mini and some BMWs these days. I'd have no hesitation choosing them. Black Circles are usually fairly pride competitive.

Ther aside, there's little point me or anyone specifically recommending Continetal XYZs or Dunlop ABCs as none of us have exactly the same car as you, and just because they suit a Ford Tippex nicely doesn't mean they will your Bimmer,

As a point of order, the noise rating is a drive-by measure and is not automatically indicative of the noise transmitted into the cars cabin.

Yes I've been aware of the brand for a number of years on car forums, generally a positive rep.


A fair point. It was more to indicate "big heavy car with variable AWD", as opposed to a little city runabout. That said in a forum of many thousands of members it's a fair shout that there are a few 3 series Bimmer owners.


Duly noted, though I suspect there's reasonable correlation between outside and inside noise. The geek in me thinks differences in outside vs inside noise might be a function of frequency, i.e you'll hear lower frequencies more in the cabin as they'll be transmitted through the body and maybe also set up sympathetic vibrations in the trim.

In any case the Autotrader review for the Hankooks measured inside noise and rated them good on noise. My boy racer days are well behind me and I like a quiet refined ride.

On the subject of big heavy cars, if you are looking for comfy, decent truly all weather performance in all seasons flavour, and Hankook branded, then these are really excellent:

I reckon we have racked up 35-40000 miles on 2 sets so far on our XC70.

My 440i came with Hankooks fitted. Better ride than the Pirelli run flats on the previous 435d. Nice and quiet too. Haven’t really stressed them

People have their own preferences on tyres so I won't recommend any.
Black Circles however are excellent. Buy on the website, get them to organise the fitting locally. Sorted.

@Dadam Hankooks are a good brand - had them on my Audi and replaced them with the same each time.
Try www.camskill.co.uk. I’ve bought from there a few times amd always cheaper than Blackcircles and good service. Fronts are currently £100.25 and rears £121.20 + delivery (£13 per pair) so that’s a decent saving still

You’ll just need to arrange fitting locally which I have previously around £15 per tyre inc disposal of the old one.

I used to use Camskill almost without exception but I found that once carriage and fitting costs were added their previous price advantage had disappeared over the last few years.

Always used a local tyre shop/fitter myself to purchase tyres...same for the car and repair work, id prefer to keep someone local in business.
They want your business and the repeat custom so I personally find it pays to stay local if possible.

We're quite relieved that Mrs D needed new tyres on her lease car is it means the horrible Maxxis OE rubber has gone and some pleasant Continentals have taken their place.

Absolutely terrible wet weather grip from the Maxis.
