TBH I think people agonise too much about off road tyre choice.

The Borough CX tyres on the Tricross are fine off road. Soon after I bought my Tricross I took it over Hornby Road, which is a stony shooters' track that runs over the Bowland Fells. Once I had dropped the pressures a bit to stop the tyres bouncing off rocks they were grippy although you have to accept that a 32mm tyre will often be deflected by rocks rather than roll over them. On wet grass they gripped surprisingly well and only on a couple of occasions did I feel them slip sideways. At 40 lbs they and the Shwalbe Landcruisers I tried had a tendency to bottom out on the rims on big hits though I never actually got a pinch puncture.

On tarmac the Tricross is about 1 mph slower on average than my carbon roadie with 23mm Michelin Pro 3s. The Boroughs seem like an excellent all-purpose tyre to me.

+1 to all of that. The only place I've found the Boroughs struggled for grip was very wet mud, where they tend to slide around, otherwise they've worked pretty well.

Of course I could just be a lot less fitter than you lot

I was just surprised on my first outing on the Tricross how much harder it was for me as against the Allez

I only venture out 2 to 3 times a week and do around 10 miles per outing

Plus I live half way up the pennines in a very hilly area :headshake:

Ok

I now agree the Borough CXs are fine on the road

Just had my 2nd outing on the Tricross and recorded the same average speed as I do on the Allez

I did give the bike a mini lube service before I set out as well.

Put a drop more oil (Mikle method) on the chain and sprayed GT85 on the moving bits and tonight I enjoyed the Tricross as much as the Allez with the added bonus of pointing it where I wanted without worrying about the state of the roads

I do feel I need to put a little more effort in climbing the hills but its a small price to pay (plus my leg muscles are now like the hulks, just not green ^_^)

Vittoria Cross XN Pros are fantastic. Fast rolling on the road, excellent puncture protection and pretty good in everything except pure mud.
