details I suppose help

they're to go on a tricross, to be used for commuting, touring and club runs. I ride on hard packed dirt a lot, gravel tracks and roads. Sometimes in the mud but I've accepted I won't have much grip there if I want to hold a decent pace on the road

For what it's worth, the kind of riding you describe is very similar to what I do (except I avoid the mud as much as possible). I'm currently using 700x35 Schwalbe Marathons on my main bike which I've found pretty good. They've worn very well so far, roll decently quick on the road, are comfortable and feel sure footed on forestry roads (though I don't chuck it round corners like I'm racing).

On the other bike (26" wheels so not a direct comparison) I have Conti TourRides which I think are probably a better tyre on gravel/dirt tracks as they have a slightly more aggressive tread pattern but still roll well on the road. In my experience they also cope pretty well with mud for a road tyre.

My singlecross is rocking a pair of 35mm Schwalbe Land Cruisers at the moment. They're more off road than on road but of all the 'cross-esque tyres I've tried (which isn't loads) they've been the most capable on road. Which I know isn't quite what you asked for. Otherwise my commuter has 32mm Marathon+s which weigh about as much as the RMS Titanic but roll pretty well and so long as it's not muddy are surefooted enough off road.
How about the Specialized Borough CX Sport that Tricrosses come with?
I don't like them, not really sure why but they don't inspire any confidence......

I'll consider the marathon+'s but they're meant to be tank like in weight. Tempted by the land cruisers if they handle well on the road.... I'll go look at city tyres as well as cx ones...

Okay I was thinking sammy slicks, but michelin jets suit what I think I want more. They're a bit skinnier so should be faster on road, a few reviews say they hate low pressures (not an issue I rarely drop below 50psi off road and run them properly on road). I wanna order them tonight so I can ride my bike again

Hi I have a giant roam 3(2011), they have Kenda Kwicks 700x40 but i have a chunk out the back wheel, what new tyres would you recommend? cheaper the better!

If you've fitted slicks then watch out for drain covers in the wet.... fweeeeee!

I don't know about the roam, but I'm rating my Sammy slicks.

Dead easy to fit, properly rapid in the dry, but a but of a liability in the wet...

Just to back up the liability bit, I went round a corner that poses me no trouble on my tourer, but today I was on my mtb with slicks and now have a lot less skin than I had when I woke up this morning.

Two motorists stopped to ask if I was okay, which was very nice of them.

Be very careful indeed, especially on that stupid slippy block paving some councils fit at junctions.

Chuckling at the mental image/memory of having been there before. I've found them to get a lot better after a while, my first ride was wet and I was routinely spinning the back wheel climbing. They do feel significantly faster than my specialised stock tyres that had what looked like car tread (if you know what I mean, shallow and maybe for water removal)

I've just bought a 2011 Specialized Tricross Sport which came with Borough CX Sport

I own a Allez Sport as well but due to the poor road surfaces decided I needed a beefier bike

After my first road ride tonight on the Tricross,my leg muscles are aching a bit more than usual and in general it took more effort on the road than the Allez (appreciate the Allez is a road racer and the Tricross isn't)

I need a decent size tyre, 32/35 with plenty of air/protection for the bad roads, but something quicker than the Boroughs

I fancy trying a few canal paths and light off roads as well

Sammy Slicks seem to come with good reviews as do the Michelin Jets

Also had a look at these which also seem to be suitable?
