Buy a second hand hybrid, these are relatively cheap, but better to get someone with knowledge of bike mechanics to check it over before you buy.
After using this bike you will come to understand what you want from a bike, and what you will actually use the bike for, armed with some riding experience you will be able to select the new bike that best suits your needs.
Some of the factors(in no particular order) to consider when buying a new bike.... manoeuvrability / performance / load carrying ability(panniers or not) / mudguards, or not / drop 'bars/straight 'bars/ gearing to suit your locality / maintenance issues, etc. etc.
After buying your new bike, hold on to the hybrid as your reserve bike, we all need a reserve bike
