TV 42/43" Recommendation

This may not be relevant to the original poster, PaulSB, but may be worthy of a mention.
I have a ten year old Samsung 40’’ and I run the sound output from the headphone socket through my hi fi amp and stereo speakers which gives a vast improvement over the sound from the TV itself.
But, try finding a TV these days that has a headphone socket. I know there are one or two but choice is severely limited.
I am resigned to perhaps having to buy a soundbar when I next change my TV. Unless someone on here knows if there is an adapter that can convert a TV output socket ( HDMI ? ) to headphone socket.

If you have Bluetooth headphones I understand you can buy a Bluetooth adapter for TVs that don’t have it built-in. Not relevant of course if you don’t have Bluetooth headphones.

Not a hifi expert by any means but sounds like you just want a DAC (digital analog converter) with HDMI input and headphone or line output. Or maybe optical input as all except cheapo TVs should have one ready for soundbars etc.
Like most things audio these are available for anything between a tenner and thousands!

How about this one? A snip at £10,495! Or this for 0.1% of that price

Thank you Dadam for that info. The £10.99 item from Amazon might be just what I need when I take the plunge and invest in a new TV. I have taken a screen shot of the item so I can refer back to it.

Televisions are one of those products that becomes less reliable as you get more expensive. One issue is edge lit LEDs which are run at higher brightness so you can create a thinner television. Televisions typically are more reliable when they are fatter at the back and often can have better sound due to larger speakers. They also typically have better cooling and the larger number of LEDs run much cooler due to their lower light intensity. Many famous Japanese and European brands are still mainly Chinese televisions or televisions from Turkey typically like Vestel which many entry level Panasonic televisions for example.

The best operating system for a television is android, it means a more future proof set and you can run apps like Smart tube next that remove the adverts from youtube etc.

I personally think the sweetspot for value is TCL and Hisense but I would only consider a android based set.

It's OLED. Different ball game in terms of picture quality
Yep. The picture quality is stunning especially for a TV of this size. The TV sound is good as a stand alone. The Which? report describes this TV as "The staggering picture quality and surprisingly expansive sound for such a small TV ensures it’s one of the best on the market."

The current offer includes a "free" sound bar and while I already have one this is a step up. My current bar is 10 years old. So if I take the sound bar at full value the overall deal is good. TV available at £879 less "free" sound bar at £199 = a TV for £680. I don't think we could do better for this level of quality.

Thanks. I hear what everyone has said about screen size. I hadn't thought of this and will get my tape measure out…..

…..Another consideration is the current setup involves numerous cables. A new TV would only require an ethernet connection and possibly the aerial for recording.

You cannot really have too ‘Big’ a screen in my view ^_^.

I sit about 1.5 meters away when gaming on the 100ich projector screen, 4K resolution actually matters!! For normal viewing we have an 55inch OLED panel, the ‘feel’ of the image is very different from the projector screen, both are good/bad in different ways. Gaming for me is very much about ‘escapism’ with the massive projector delivers in a way the OLED panel cannot. The OLED panel deliver amazing level of black/motion, but with a 4K source looks almost ‘too real’.

We also have a TV in the main sitting room, its a LED panel, which between the OLED and projector interms of pure image quality, but its main job is to not distract from the main focus of the room, which is the fire place.

Sound for me is as important as the image, my old Denon amp + M&S speakers (floor standers are bi-amped) still deliver the goods for 5.1 surround and for stereo. I’ve got a HMDI splitter hooked in to allow me to send 4K visuals to the displays. I’ve not gone down the Atomos sound route. For the other parts of the house I’ve decided to go with B&W stuff this time, with soundbar+bass for the other TV, Zepplin for the study, and will add the Wedge soon to the kitchen. For music it sounds great, not so good for films, but we only really watch films in the media room.

…..Oh I wouldn’t be so sure about having less cables with modern tech:hyper:

The speakers I’m using the Media room are 20 years old and going strong!!!

If you have the space/resources I would honest go down the dedicated amp+speaker route. You can pick up older Denon amps for £200 and a full set of good quality used 5.1 speakers for the same, once setup it’ll blow any sound bar out of the water for sound staging. Looking on eBay I’m pretty sure I can put together an fantastic 5.1 setup for sub £500.

I was ’forced’ to get a sound bar for the living TV due to SWMBO not wanting ‘mess’ in the living room. The soundbar is fine/good for music/stereo but honestly it delivers I would say 30% of the experience of the 5.1 setup in the media room. The mad bit the soundbar wasn’t cheap, and by the time you have added in the wireless dedicated sub you are into 4 figure digits for the B&W Formation system.

So paying more for ££££ for far less quality/effect, the only benefit is convince, which I do get and why we are using a soundbar for the living room TV despite its inferior performance.

I'm sold on this LG, I now have to persuade Mrs P. She was happy for me to buy a TV but I'm not sure she was thinking of £800+. Tremendous reviews and I've seen the picture quality instore today, amazing. Does anyone have one and can comment?

We have the older version of that TV (OLED48C34LA), picture is superb, you won't be disappointed. We have the sound through a Denon amp & 5.1 speakers in our small living room to compliment the picture quality. The amp does ok with streaming audio like Spotify & BBC Sounds.

Thank you. Yes, I tried to find this one as the reviews are fantastic. Which? simply described it as "extraordinary."
