Those of you joining me in France, don’t forget you can take a spare set of wheels in the trailer. Angus has had trips where clincherbusers have had catastrophic failures and have needed to use spares. I will bring a spare set and spokes etc

I read something interesting the other day (well I thought it was...) Apparently the added effort it takes to turn a wheel with a 25mm tyre compared to a 23mm is worth one tooth on the big ring. E.g going from 53 teeth to 54. Due to making the radius of the wheel larger. So going from 28 to 25mm should make the bike feel like it climbs easier in theory.

Larger circumference means your acceleration is slower a little. Once upto speed your cadence will be slightly less on a larger circumference. Lighter the rim as the overall weight of the wheel will give the sensation of quick pickup. These are all marginal and probably only of real advantage to the elite/pro riders

You definitely notice the difference going up hill. Lighter frame, lighter wheels, lighter carcass! It all helps. I notice the difference between 46mm rims and 60. Marginal but real!

I'd add, I'd not recommend anyone coming on rimmed braked carbon clinchers.

Cyclist mag/web site has a lot about climbing and wheel weight etc. At end of day it’s largely watts per kilo so on current form we can expect Lee to disappear into the distance^_^

Absolutely.
Rob descended Ventoux on ali rims and he is a great descender and his rims were still pretty hot to the touch. Brake on descending on carbon rim brake clinchers on unfamiliar roads is only for the brave or the experienced.

Enough of us to probably get in your way at the start^_^ after that we will be trying to draft you!
I think 6 of us
I dont mind getting a bit wind on my nose, but wouldn't it be unfair to the other participants if you had a 24 hour head start?

A bit like these guys attempting to win the Champs-Élysées stage by starting at 2 AM:

(They almost didn't make it because Bobby (with the glasses) fell asleep and drove into the Seinen)

Yeah ultimately watts per kilo (Lee ) wins. But it's not a race for me. I'm going to try savour it as much as possible. But no doubt whatever weight you are lighter gear 'feels' more effortless

I know it is said a lot but next years trip is not a race
I do want to feel like I have gave it a good go up one of them but would much rather bimble along up most - trouble is gearing - currently 29/36 - to get a rhythm going so it don’t become too hard , it does mean that you tend to go faster than you should - think I may go down to 34 or even 33 inner ring next year and see what happens
