A guy from Hong Kong in the Alps turned up with Dura ace 53/39 11-28, he was quite light, but absolutely struggled on all the climbs with a very slow standing grind. Good job he was young, bit he was always last up the climbs

On day 4 he took his bike into the local shop and they fitted 34 inner ring. shifting was perfect from 53/34 each way SRAM electronic shifting

So the summer and winter bike are exactly the same geometry, the winter bike frame is just a bit heavier and has cheaper components. I could change the rings on thbe summer bike but only to 50/34 X 12-29 so a minimum gear inch of 30.77 or the 32x30 would give me 28.14 gear inches so much shorter and for less money.

I have plenty of time to think about it and keep an eye out for bargains.

Whatever you take there’s going to be a moment where you’ll wish you had one more gear. I think I’d of been fine with 34 / 30 ish to be honest. But I wouldn’t of said no if someone had offered me a frisbee to swap with my 32!

I would go for the smallest gear as possible. I did two Alpe attempts a few years ago, one on a Trek carbon 33/28 and another on a Trek alu triple crank. Even though the alu was heavier, I was faster on the alu because I could find my optimal cadence.
Really hated both those Trek bikes, btw.

Using 33/28 gearing I have to go at 16 kph up the first 3 steep hairpins to keep my optimal cadence, and I just don't have the power to do that (Adam Yates did them at 17.5 kph back in 2015)

I think the conclusion to this debate is generally always the same to be honest. It’s different for everyone, depending on weight, fitness, power, gradient, length of ride etc etc. I’m a big believer in being comfortable within your gear ration rather than being on the edge of it. But unfortunately in some ways you only discover what works for you personally through testing for yourself.

For me I think 34 / 32 is the max I’ll need, and going down to 30 would be ‘ok’. But obviously everyone is slightly different.

CXRANDY put me on to the 33 inner ring ( can’t remember from where ) it had suppose to fit Campag but I think I ordered the wrong one and I had to get the offset hole milled slightly
No issues shifting from 33 to 50
If I had another gear I would have used it but I didn’t - and I didn’t want to cry in front of tommy
Would have liked to have seen that photo Lee :cry:Would have made us heavier riders feel better about ourselves when we end up crying :laugh:
