Hello! This is my first time using his forum, and I am a bit of a bike newbie. Unfortunately, my dad was in a bad bike crash this Wednesday, and I am wondering if the chain being caught could cause the bike tire to lock up some how? I have attached the photo of the bike chain after the accident. Could this cause a crash??

Holy Cow, hope you're Dad's ok.

Yes, catastrophic chain or drive train problems can indeed cause a loss of control, and the faster you're going the less time you have to react to it.

However, it could possibly be that if your Dad was on the big ring then the chain has been thrown off during the accident, but didn't actually cause it.

He was definitely on the biggest gear, he was going down a hill that he usually does about 35 down. So you think if that was the case, the chain being like it is in the picture, probably wouldn't be the cause of a crash?

the chain coming off and fouling the crank arm could have caused your dad to lose control of the bike or as others have said it could have come off after the crash. More details and pictures might help.

This is a more zoomed out photo... he was at the bottom of the hill, on the side of the road. His bike has literally no damage (other then the chain being loose) yet he hit the ground hard enough to crack his helmet (a piece can be seen next to the bike) and broke 3 ribs. Just trying to figure out how this would happen, outside of him losing control by avoiding a car/animal.

It's impossible to say. I wasn't there to witness the event.

You are looking at the wrong end of the drive train if the rear wheel locked up.

As others have said it's an unknown from that image, but it's what the chain was doing at the other end which may tell you, around the cogs on the rear wheel

Edit:- Just as Vernon has pointed out.

It is difficult to know the exact cause so we will only be speculating as to the cause of the accident, you say he usually does about 35mph down that particular hill, is it possible he has hit a pothole or something as this could throw the chain off and cause loss of control at that speed. Without actually witnessing the incident we can only guess at what happened.

Hope Dad's ok.
its usually the rear that locks after the chain gets snagged in the wheel..but if the chain came off at the front while out of the sadle ? This may have been more likely to have caused loss off balance and then control..

all the best mate, hope dad's back on his bike soon

It ain't difficult to crack a helmet. During one of my training sessions a few years back one of my students dropped her lid. It fell from her lap to the carpeted classroom floor and split around 1/2 it's circumference.

Going back to your Pa I suspect we'll never figure out if the chain caused the accident or came off as a consequence of the fall. Perhaps your Dad can shed some light on it?

I wish he could, right now he is in ICU still. He had a severe concussion, and apparently the helmet saved his life. He knows my families names and that is about it right now, so I've just been trying to piece it together the best I could. I hope someday he will be better and remember the accident, but it is unlikely he will.

Chains on the cassette so i doubt that jammed.

probably got a tank slapper..ie bars flapped at speed and off the bike you go..
