get the more expensive one if your insurance covers it!

seriously tho, I woulda thought the cheaper one would be lighter as it doesnt have mechanical disc brakes.

Well everyone will have a different opinion here - but for me, at this price range, I'd rather use the money to upgrade the "drive" componentry of the bike rather than worrying about weight and disc brakes. Especially as the main use will be commutting. As people have pointed out, and I know from experience, there's not really much call for disc brakes on a hybrid because you just don't get them muddy enough to hinder performance.

This bike got good reviews in a recent "Bikes for £400" article a couple of months back.

I'm sure others will make other suggestions!
