CYCLING IRELAND EGM:

Venue: the Red Cow hotel in Dublin
Date: June 15th.
Resolution: “That Mr. Pat McQuaid be and is hereby nominated by Cycling Ireland to stand as a candidate for the Presidency of the UCI at the 2013 UCI Congress and that the said nomination be executed and submitted forthwith by the Board of this Company.”

Be interesting to see local club noise on the subject over the next 6 weeks.

Like in the Italian president elections... if no one steps up as a valid candidate.. just go back to the (87 year) old dinosaur that was president before

McQuaid's latest nomination could yet hit a snag. Under article 51 of the UCI constitution, the candidates for the presidency "shall be nominated by the federation of the candidate".
As a former president of Cycling Ireland, McQuaid holds an honorary lifetime Cycling Ireland licence and it was confirmed by Cycling Ireland yesterday that he has an Irish licence for 2013.
Even though he has lived near UCI headquarters in Switzerland since 2005, under UCI rule number 1.1008, the licence holder "shall remain affiliated to that (Irish) federation until the expiry of the licence, even if he changes country of residence".
Under UCI rule number 1.1009 "a licence holder may hold the licence of only one national federation", so McQuaid cannot hold a Swiss licence and therefore yesterday's nomination by the Swiss federation could yet be deemed invalid.

Haha! This is amusing to watch - if somewhat tragic given the serious matters to which it relates. Mr McQuaid must be quite irritated at this stage... I am not sympathetic.

It appears he is going the route of "residency". There are quite a few NZ/Aus riders, and others, living in UK who have BC licences because they live here. Whatever the UCI regs say, there will be a way around for those who look hard enough, and who better to know their way around that than an incumbent president with their in-house lawyers to help?
