Meanwhile, the government has temporarily relaxed the legal restrictions on the length of time hauliers can stay behind the wheel.

This is to ease the back logs, parked up trucks etc caused by recent weather.

I can understand the why of it but do you really want tired drivers behind the wheel in such conditions? An argument for shortening the hours perhaps!

It's not a blanket lifting of the restrictions, just confined to essential supplies -

"It covers drivers distributing feed to livestock farms, oil and gas to domestic and agricultural premises, as well as deliveries of de-icer products to airports".

They're allowing drivers to do ten hours a day instead of nine, and only for four days. Hardly earth-shattering, and I wondered how much difference it will make. Mind you, enough drivers all doing four hours extra work may have the desired effect.

I believe it is only an extra hour for four days, because on one of your five days of driving you can do ten hour anyway. Only just started using a digital tacho so don't hold me to it.

I only drove a 3 tonner but it was the most exhausting job I ever did; you had to concentrate so hard, you couldn't relax for a minute.
