Not sure why all the complaints about homework.
My mother in her capacity as a teacher at a private primary school on Kenya, had some Koreans and some Japanese pupils. Same school I went to.
Their parents expected at least 1 to 2 hours homework per day and got extra tuition on Saturday mornings.

'Junior' (Japanese) was 7. He was in the class below me as I was 8. He got promoted to our class after only a couple of weeks. He then stayed in our class for 2 months. Then he got shifted upwards to the year above.
The Korean kids were speaking English in 8 weeks and most of the other far eastern pupils way ahead of their counterparts.
I don't see the problem with say a half hour per day during holidays. You could exclude summer so that they get a total break from it.

Yeah but it's more along the lines of the kids thought they will get no homework, and then halfway during the holidays they get a the sad news that they will have homework. What if we were abroad somewhere taking a vacation: should the kids have homework then?

It reminds me of when I had to work while I was on vacation - like what's the point of the vacation then.

My computer is about to offer me four options when I close it down:
Lock
Sleep
Update and shut down
Update and restart.

Whichever of the last two options I chose, the computer will restart. Why give me the illusion of choice?

Brum Jim - your avatar is the same as a framed print I have! You been to the printers at ironbridge?

Yesterday's discovery is why I am rubbish at some woodwork.
I realised that my circular saw is right handed.
I am left handed
As a result I cannot easily see the blade and whatever line I have drawn.
Really wondered why I had problems.
When I use the guide then thing are fine. But just following xthe line doesn't do it.

Now I don't suppose there is a left handed circular saw out there that rubs on Makita 18v batteries..

All power tools are basically built for right handed use, some of them are easier for us lefties to use than others. Some things like petrol strimmers and hedge trimmers can be a real pain as the hot exhaust can be in an awkward place for left handed use.

Happens a bit in France; you're doing the speed limit through a town with an impatient driver behind you. As you approach the town exit, and open road speed limits, they overtake. Your both still in town limits remember. As you hit the open road, you accelerate but you see them along side you. You drive alongside each other for a bit. They're trying to force you to drop back to let them ahead.

Similarly, mono-speeders wind me up. Same 40 mile/h in towns and villages as the open countryside. Prevalent in the UK.

Should we prepare them for a world of zero-hour contracts?

Yes, unless you have a realistic expectation of never being on zero-hour contracts. Funny thing is that those higher up the career tree are the most likely to be expected to be in contact while on holiday. (Based mostly on cycling forum posts.)

40? You're lucky. They barely get above 35 here. One passed me in town. I did not catch up with him/her until I was about 1 mile out of town. And there he/she was - same speed, about 35mph.
I was behind a driver in the bendy back roads in my 944. I tried to pass twice except he moved over to the middle of the road to prevent me. He was barely doing 20 around some of the bends. No I don't mind; he has every right to drive at that speed but just indicate left at a safe spot and let me by and don't don't play silly bugger traffic safety cop.
He proceeded to move over into a layby as there was a tractor coming. There was enough room for both him and the tractor. I passed him and he flashed his lights and beeped his horn furiously at me!!

Windows Updates sometimes require to do an automatic restart (or two) as part of the process. Could that be what you're seeing?

Microsoft Teams.......

Found out today that two Groups that have essential work files and GDPR sensitve material have been irrecoverably deleted as they expired whilst I was undergoing cancer treatement and was in critical care in hospital! Only my boss and I had access to these Groups. She left shortly before I was diagnosed and was off sick. Didn't have chance to add the new boss as then he was only an interim position. No one was there to renew the Groups. Our IT dept. insist that we use Teams, yet they hold up their hands when it all goes tits-up. It wasn't my choice to get cancer.
Basically I'm now f*cked because of this!
