Since ive put on a bit of weight im struggling to climb some of the hills around here even with a 30/30 lowest gear.

Can i put a 48/38/28 crankset on there with the hollowtech 2 bottom bracket? and if so which one?

it will only be for the winter while i train in the gym to lose some more poundage and improve fitness

If changing from a compact double, you will need a triple specific front derailleur, a long cage derailleur,, triple specific brifters and a different length chain.

If it's a triple already, then yes you can just change over and just adjust the chain.

edit: just seen you have a 30, so must be a triple already.
Going to a 28 I can't honestly see it's going to make that much difference.

I just took the 30 tooth little ring off my bike and put a 26 on. It gives a great low gear, but the drop down from my 39 middle ring is a bit much, and I have to be careful not to drop the chain. (My 'Dog Fang' stops the chain getting jammed against the frame, but it doesn't fall back onto the little ring the way it did with the 30.)

As long as the little ring bolts on separately, I don't see why not. (I read that on some chainsets/cranksets, the 2 inner rings are fixed together.)

I have Campagnolo on my bike, but the bolt circle diameter for the little ring is the same as Shimano's so I didn't have a problem fitting a non-Campagnolo ring.

I think if I were doing it again, I would go for the 28 too, because the shifting would be better than with the 26. It is rare that I need my very lowest gear, and soon I won't need it at all.

Think i'm just going to man-up and leave it the way it is and shed the poundage while working hard to improve climbing

Losing weight makes a huge difference. The last time I got slim and fit, I found climbing in 39/23 as easy as 30/26 had felt when I had been fat and less fit. It take a bit longer to achieve than changing your gearing though ...

Yeh its a long term goal colin - back in 2012 when i started cycling i was 19.5stone - i got down to 15stone through diet and cycling, but a illness to my partner curtailed my training along with a very cold winter in the welsh valleys. Therefore putting two stone back on - so the goal is to train hard through this winter with the aid of the gym membership i have with work, supplement with weekend rides and get back down to my goal weight on 14stone by hopefully my 38th birthday in april

fingers crossed

Man up. No point throwing money at a bike and components when the engine is crap. You've got to work at it. Get out riding rather than finding a smaller gear. :ninja:

Good luck!

I am a medium build and 6'1" tall. My adult weight has varied from a scrawny 10 st 10 lbs as a student to a very large 16 st 9 lbs before I got ill in summer 2012, and has been up and down in between 3 or 4 times.

I am well on the way down again now and I don't think I could handle getting obese again, so I intend to keep my weight down this time. I am going to monitor my scales and take drastic action if I ever put on more than 3 or 4 pounds again.

If is going to make the difference between getting out or not then you can swap the cassette for a 32 or even 34. That's an easier and cheaper way I think. Getting out will help you lose weight. The gym is a good idea but pretty boring after a while I find anyway.
