A mountain bike is fine. If it's like a 3 speed sit up and beg, then no. If it's a multi geared hybrid, then it should be OK.

As said some of it is really good, semi tarmaced but there are sections where it's not much better than a muddy rutted path, and other sections where it's rough terrain. Mountain bikes would be best. The other point, is you will need to take some rags and oil to clean the drive chain (cassette, chain and chain rings) at the end of the day, if the conditions are like they are now. It's very boggy in South Manchester.

Not sure if you've done this now or not but a friend and I did this last year for charity in May. A great ride. We did it on hybrid bikes with touride tyres on - we were lucky with the weather as it didn't rain on us once - it might have been tricky in a few spots in the wet but most of the trial is well made so a hybrid is fine. We were in much better condition at the other end than some guys doing it on MTB's at the same time ;-) We stayed in travel inns in Stockport / Doncaster / Hull which worked fine. be careful coming out of Doncaster - the route it shows across the bridge doesn't exist!

I was "dreaming" of doing this but I don't have a suitable bike.

What do you guys recommend? I was thinking of getting a MTB but it sounds like this may be overkill and a hybrid or cx may be more ideal.

The trail near me Barnsley to Selby is OK on a CX Hybrid bike, If I was to do the whole trail a MTB would be my choice there are sections going over the Pennines that are a bit rough & if you are unlucky with the weather mud could be a problem on some sections.

There are sections where you would be pushing a hybrid, but that said if you aren't that experienced then you would be pushing an MTB. There is a section near me that needs an MTB and a good climbing ability as its steep and very rough (rocks). You can push the 200 meters though.

I've done it both ways on a hybrid, rode all the way East to West, but the weather was poor doing it the opposite direction & some of the trails, over the pennines, were hard going & ended up walking, but would have probably been walking if I'd had a MTB too.

Just seen this thread. I did some of the TPT years ago and I still have Map 2 - Central - Derbyshire & Yorkshire. I also have the official Accommodation & Visitor Guide for the whole TPT.

I live in Glossop so can easily hand these over to you if they are of any use. PM me if you're interested. Whilst you have your accommodation sorted, the guide is very good for places of interest along the way.

If you can post them I'd take them off you. Can cover postage costs.

There's a group of 11 riding the TPT on the late May bank holiday. All seasoned riders but road rather than trail riding.

Could anybody tell me if the weather gets too bad and muddy is there an easy road alternative for the muddier sections.

We've got 70 miles to do on day 1 so really need to be making decent progress all day.

Thanks for any replies

Also what training is needed as we haven't been on our bikes since last summer. Any advice or information would be great. Thanks Catherine
