I'm not going to say it is bullshit, because there is merit in context. However in the context of 99% of people on this forum, the best thing they could do, for their cycling, is cycling.

Also unless you race, where your discipline has a particular season, do you really have an off season?

Once upon a time, when Rob was in nappies (and I used to race), people used to talk about an 'off season' - it wasn't as most either commuted or still rode the bike on club runs - it was 'old hat' then 20 years ago.

If you commute and race, you have an 'upper hand' already. I don't race anymore, but my commute now keeps me fitter than the training I did 20 years ago.

Just ride your bike.

When the only riding for road bikes seemed to be with clubs, no one-absolutely no-one used to drop out of sunday club runs in winter 20 odd years ago.

What he said
I will admit i never raced as i was never really into cycling enough in my youth , martial arts was my ticket and i podium-ed a number of events but enjoyed riding a bike for fun .Nowadays i can go a while without a club run and still keep my climbing edge although my distance endurance tends to drop a bit after a while but its still a head start .

I need to get serious about this stuff....looks pretty dull though compard to actually riding...

What are we all doing to get /keep in shape other than actually riding this winter?

Nothing, I don't train anymore, these days I just enjoy riding my bike, I've never raced but for years I was on the turbo watching the heart monitor bounce starting at the beginning of December twice a week till the end of February, in those days I was a regular on the club rides and used to do the spring reliability rides every year, these days most of my rides are done alone.
