I happened to have a spare wheel so bought a special tyre and a spare cassette. Makes life much easier. There is a tendency for normal tyres to get lumps in (not sure why or how!). Also my turbo needs a special skewer so I can leave that on the special wheel

A dedicated wheel isn't necessary. If you use a regular tyre it may wear down a bit quicker (depends on the turbo) and if you use it exclusively on the turbo it'll get a bit glazed so grip on the road for the first ride is rubbish, but those that talk of tyres getting shredded on turbos simply don't know how to set them up properly. Also, no reason why you can't use the turbo skewer out on the road - they're regular skewers with a bit of extra metal to fit the clamp more snugly that's all. My turbo didn't come with a skewer anyway so I just use a regular old-style one.

One thing you may notice if you use a regular tyre to do intervals on a turbo is that you may get punctures. The heat build up can cause failure of the tubes. Special turbo tyres are made with a cooler running compound and I noticed my turbo punctures ceased when I started using such a tyre.

BTW, cover your stem and top tube area with something to soak up the sweat or be prepared to see all that salt eat your bike

Punctures have never been a problem for me. Also don't have a problem with sweat as I have two big fans running even in my garage where its often only a few degrees Celsius.

You aren't going hard enough to build up the heat in either the tyre or yourself.

Got a Continental home trainer tyre, arrived today, bugger to get on, but all sorted now
I also found that. However, they are great - they even reduce the noise a little. Enjoy your turbo.

I have now also bought the riser block for my Turbo Trainer, what a difference it makes, no more thinking I am going downhill all the time :becool:
