Delgado, the winner in 1988, lost 2:40 before the 1989 Tour had even begun...

That's right, he showed up late for the TT. He very nearly made it up and ended up 3rd. Without that error he would have won. I remember it now you've said. Quite an astonishing performance by him to try and get back.

It was a good performance by Garmin and Sky was also good by coming within four secs of them. I'm sure Radioshack expected to be nearer to the top in this stage. Contador now has a 'hill to climb' to get close to the yellow jersey so it should make a very interesting race!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re the spectator: IMO it was the rider at fault and not the spectator, he seemed to veer off line and the spectator was quite clearly standing on the verge, the rider hit the spectator rather than the spectator moving into the rider.

The 'Cliche Kings' on ITV 4 were making out that it was some sort of conspiracy against Contador and that they still didn't know who the woman was or why she was facing in the opposite way....

All I can say is that it must have hurt big time!!

They did do well, guess it could have been better if riders hadn't dropped off the back but then the same goes for a lot of the teams, it was quite a relentless pace.

No idea. I can't even remember where I found it now. I'd be interested to know though......

There's a short Lumière film of people throwing snowballs at each other outside the walls of a large house. A cyclsit comes into the scene being chased by someone else (policeman?). Cyclsist gets pushed off, picks up his bike and goes on his way. I took this photo while the film was playing; you can just about make out the man picking his bike up.
