Hi everyone. Just compared the Pro wrench with the Giant. The Giants range is from 2nm-24nm whilst the pro is only 3nm-15nm. The Giant is £15-£20 cheaper as well. On that basis it appears the Giant is better value. Am I correct or should I factor in something else ?

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
For those still looking - from a thread earlier this year (try a forum search for 'torque wrench'):

To cover everything you will really need two wrenches, and a range of allen bits, sockets, adapters etc., but for most jobs a wrench with a low range will be most useful:

Here is my post from early 2009/ October2010: My link

Recently, after considerable searching/research, I finally bought two torque wrenches from PVR Direct, both Sealey, and both with calibration certificates. A STW1012, 2-24 Nm, and an AK623, 27.1 -108.5 Nm. Also Sealey S0533 Hex Bit & Holder set, and a couple of adaptors/sockets. All for about £60. I am no expert but I think they are pretty good - as I said I did a lot of research, and was looking for certificated kit - and they were discounted by more than 50% when I bought them. Best prices around at the time. Also relatively difficult to find 'light' torque wrenches anyway. The S0533 Hex bit and holder set is really worth having.

- still well priced - see PVR tools

If the Giant is calibrated properly then you get a broader range of torque than a properly calibrated Pro wrench. Which is, in theory, very useful.

However, of all the bits on my bike that I use a torque wrench on, none of them need more than 15nm of torque. On that basis there's no need for the extra torque that the Giant one offers. As for value, I went for the Pro one as my LBS mechanic seemed pretty certain it was the best one on the market for my needs (and noted that he uses one in the workshop) - which was good enough for me. There aren't many companies that make torque wrenches so most are just branded versions of generic tools (I think Shimano do make the Pro ones themselves) but most are Norbar, if the Giant is a Norbar then it is probably a better deal.

That said, I know someone who got a BBB one for about £50 and found it very difficult to work with whereas the Pro one is dead simple. Ultimately you pays your money and you takes your choice.

Thanks for the advice fella's. I'll have to wait until payday anyway and plump for one or the other. It sounds like you're both happy with yours so I might toss a coin. Not very scientific but I don't think I could go far wrong either way. cheers.
