personally, i think you may have trapped the tube between the tyre and rim, easily done, but easily checked. having 80psi in a 70psi max should have been ok, not ideal, but ok. (see sheldonbrown.com for info on built in safety margins).

it could also have a duff tube, i've just gone thru 3 'exploding tubes', replaced by the lbs with giant's own brand (tubbycyclist was out with me when one of them went).

If it's a 70 psi tyre I am hazarding a guess that it's a fairly large tyre on a broad rim.

Unlike some thinner clinchers on road bikes that will stay put beyond the max pressure, if you over cook a broader rim/tyre combination it's going to force the bead of the tyre up off the rim, then your tubes going to poke out of the gap like a hernia until it goes bang.

The tube is larger in volume, it's got a wide section of rim to push against - that mechanical advantage makes a difference.

Just because you can run a tightly seated low volume tyre at pressures above the max it doesn't mean it's safe to do so with a larger volume tyre and broader rim.

I tried to squeeze the last drops of life out of an old tyre on a bike, and the beading gave up just as I was passing my neighbour out walking their dog. To best of my knowledge they're still looking for the dog after the bang set it running.

Brilliant! Wish it had happened near my neighbours dog, one of those little yappy things!!
