Too many shorts to choose from

Hi
I've just joined the site and I'm also very new to cycling. Can anyone suggest a decent pair of ladies cycling shorts that have a 'smooth' pad? I've had a bit of a nasty experience with chaffing in a part of my body that shouldn't be mentioned on a public forum... I think the problem was loose shorts and a pad that had raised seams (too much movement and too much rubbing methinks!)
Can't quite believe I'm posting this as my first query, but hey-ho!

Look at Gore - the pads are shaped but the material is smooth. Make sure the shorts fit well (i.e. snug) and wear commando. Sudocreme helps too

Sigma Sport and Evans are quite good for deals

I'll have a look at Gore, and thanks for other tips. The shorts I was wearing were bib, but think they weren't a snug enough fit. Think some trial and error might be involved - but am hoping it's not going to be too nippy a process!

Bib shorts offer a new layer of complexity for women ;)

The ones I bought were quite good for the complexities and inconvenience of using a public convenience! They have a detachable bit at the back of the bib, so you can yank the shorts down without having to pull all your top layers off  They're 'Pearl Izumi Elite' - there's no way I'd have paid the full price for them but the shop I bought my bike from gave me a good discount

(don't be confused by the title!)
has quite a lot of disscussion of sore "ladies' bits", and a link to a very good post on "lovely bicycle" on the same subject.

This is great! Have only read a few posts and have already picked up some great tips - and have been laughing out loud at some of the less delicate terminology ))
