Toilet getting there

That idea is fantastic, sink filling the cistern, why not 👍🏻 love the space saving combo, never seen it before.

I can see that it saves space. I thought the waste basin water would fill the cistern. This would save water as the cistern would not have to be filled with clean mains water.

If it doesn't work this way, it should.

The toilet cistern has its own inlet valve controlled by a float. After a flush it refills the cistern. The basin waste runs into the cistern. If the cistern is full the incoming waste water will displace the water in the cistern and overflow into the pan. If you run the tap directly after a flush whilst the cistern is refilling then both sources are filling the cistern. The cistern float valve has a much higher flow rate than the tap. So if both supplies are running at the same time the float valve will always be the primary source. The basin waste is never the only source of cistern water and if you want all of the basin waste water to go towards the next flush you'll have to be quick and finish washing your hands before the float valve shuts off. The total amount of water actually saved by a set up like this is tiny. You might as well shower for five seconds less every day.

Strangely, I had worked all that out for myself. No need for a condescending lecture.

I was merely observing it would be a good water saving option. I'll leave you to do the maths but four litres in our basin is adequate for a hand-wash. Multiplied up across the millions of basins across the country that would be a significant saving.

We needed a new ball cock a few weeks ago and the latest style are designed to use a lot less water than original design so anything bigger than a rabbit dropping just doesn't get flushed away cleanly, it's all down to trying to save water

Having fitted many toilets in my plumbing work, I've concluded the old ones are better...... 9L flush works well and with an old-fashioned handle and syphon there can never be any unseen leakage into the panfrom the syphon. Modern push-button toilets give 6L flush which invariably needs 2 flushes so uses 33% more. The washer at the lower end of the push-button flush can leak water continually down the pan unseen by the customer. This is sometimes the syphon not dropping into the intended position due to the buildup of limescale within mechanism, so a 6-monthly bottle of vinegar poured into the cistern and left for a few hours is good preventative maintenance!

I'm sorry if the tone of my post came across as condescending. That wasn't my intention. I am a plumber and I've fitted three or four of these units. So I'm speaking from experience. The point i was trying to make was that these things aren't designed to save water, they're designed to save floor space.

If you really want to save water stop eating meat 😅

You can't beat an old fashioned thunderbox cistern mounted high up for clearing in a single flush😂

Hmm... I was asked to fix one about 5 years ago - It was a large, old farmhouse and the toilet wouldn't have looked out of place in a National Trust property. A 'seating area' looked like a 6ft x 2ft box with a square wooden lid. The flush pipe from the cistern to the pan was enclosed in the corner of the room! A real masterpiece. The only issue was the cistern being in the cupboard 15ft up, and when I got up a ladder, I'd have had to reach about 4ft into the cupboard to even stand a chance of replacing the syphon. the cupboard certainly wouldn't have been strong enough to crawl into. I decided it was a job for a lightweight, young person or 2 people (1 to catch the victim as they fell)

Nuffink like a good 'ole composting bog, no water at all, piddle goes through a separate system, just poo, do your doings , then chuck a handful of sawdust to absorb nasty niffs .
Despite how it sounds , it's sweet smelling, and clean, and excellent compost at tge end.
I've not got one myself , but have camped at quite a few Eco campsites to approve!
Excellent veg! But you don't want to really know that....
