Just to update: After a few days inside and warmer weather, I can happily report that the sores have now gone. Time will tell if they come back when the weather gets colder in January though.

You don't have frostbite you have chilblains. My sister gets them a lot; I get them from time to time.

No way are they an old wive's tale - I can assure you they are very real and can happen no matter how old (or young) you are.

Yep, I had it really bad last year (I'm just shy of 19). Had no choice but to walk on them as well, hurt like a bitch since they're like blisters under the skin. One of my toes swelled up and has only just recovered from having like a extra bit of flesh on the side. Nice mental image for you there!

Main thing that caused them for me wasn't just the cold, it was more a quick change in temperature like waking up in the winter and jumping into a hot shower, or coming in from the cold and putting your feet next to the radiator.

Yes, I was going to mention that. Never rapidly warm up cold feet and hands (eg, with hot water, or placing them on the radiator) - let them warm up gradually.
