I just thought I would report back on what actually happened with this. I got the SPD-SL pedals (really easy to fit), cleats and some shoes. It isn't easy at first, but it is certainly a much better solution than toe clips.

I still struggle a bit getting the pedal the right side up to get my foot clipped in, but if it doesn't then I can keep trying without needing to look at it. I feel it gives you more power than toe clips (maybe because of the hard soled shoe?) and I can go up hills easier.

My only gripe really would be that it is not easy to walk in cleated shoes - especially the SPD-SL's, but I am still very happy with the choice.

Thanks again all for your advice and help

Good luck with your new pedals! My new road bike came with toe clips, they were the first thing to go (closely followed by the bell). I'm just using the flats at the moment but will soon be going on to clipless, I'll be getting the shoes with recessed cleats as my fitness isn 't great yet and I still have to do the occasional walk of shame up a big hill so being able to walk easily is a must!
