Black and yellows comments on clipless are spot on, not really sure why you deem his comments unhelpful when you have not tried it.

This thread worked out brilliantly.

"Which is best, A or B?"

"I decided to go with A and it's far better than B, despite never trying B and regardless of the experiences of all of you that have tried A and B, and the advice which I asked for."

@mrandmrspoves. Re M424 pedals. Avoid these, they're a terrible compromise that are bulky and unnecessary if mainly clipped in and dreadfully uncomfortable if using with plain soles, you can feel the cleat really clearly digging into your foot, even for the shortest distance they're awful

Psycologist asked some questions - we gave him some answers. Most of the answers given were trying to persuade him to go with SPD's. He chose not to do so at this time. His reasons not to do so are valid. If I was just using a cycle for a quick and occasional trip into town and didn't want to spend upwards of £60 I would do the same. As stated previously.serious cyclists used toeclips for decades without problems. Many of us that use SPD's have had at least one clipless moment ....so horses for courses. When he has used toe clips for a while he may very well decide to progress to SPD's but as I suggested previously we should avoid being evangelical to the degree of ignoring an individual's requirements.

You may be right I have never tried then, I had the M545 which looks to be the same design but alloy rather than resin. They were my first SPD's and I got on fine with them and still have them on 2 of my bicycles. I agree that with thin soled flat shoes the binder mechanism can be felt under foot - but a small price to pay for the convenience of just being to jump on a bike and go into town when I don't want to walk around with cleats on or carry shoes to change into. I wouldn't dream of putting them on my road bike - but I think they're a better compromise than dual pedals that I also have on one of my bicycles.

Well i'm pleased that my enquiry has generated so many replies and comments. Its good to know that there are many of you out there prepared to share and discuss options and experiences. I've made my decision and opted for toe clips at the moment, and so far have had no problem with them. In fact, I'm very pleased with them. As for being arrogant Mr black'n'yellow, I think you ought to read back some of your own posts before directing comments like that towards others. And no I dont know where you live, why would I. And yes I am aware that mountain rescue perform a valuable and un-celebrated function, some times helping people that are ill prepared for the task they undertook. But equally, are often called on to assist people that have every possible piece of equipment and have taken every precaution. I come back to my opinion of 'horses for courses' Because these SPD suit you, it dosnt mean that other options should be thrown out or ignored. I shall leave it there and enjoy a nice few miles in the saddle on what looks like a beautiful day out there.

And no I dont know where you live, why would I.

I live in Wales mate - you know, the hilly bit on the left of the map. You should go there sometime. Until then you can add it to the expanding list of topics which you seem to know nothing about.

Because these SPD suit you, it dosnt mean that other options should be thrown out or ignored.

That's exactly what you did in this thread - the irony here is that you don't even know when you're being a hypocrite. Anyway, good luck with your toeclips and your picnic. Hopefully, a woodland creature will take a dump in your lunchbox while you're enjoying the view....
