Small deer, about the size of a spaniel. They were originally asiatic, but have been making big inroads into a lot of UK territory, having escaped from collections etc. Unlike other species they have no specific rut (mating season) and so are pretty successful in our climate. They don't have a closed season for shooting, and the venison is delicious. My mum lives in the lodge gate to an old manor house in the midlands, and has right of access to the grounds to walk the dogs etc. I have often been in the woods at the back of the house and heard them (they make a weird barking noise). On occasions you can spot them, but they are experts at disappearing into long undergrowth, so you have to be quick!
We were MTBing up Mount Keen last summer when we disturbed a small deer, maybe it was a muntjac? It was bumbling around on the track and it dashed off straight into a tree where it kind of stuck, unable to move and panicking. I think it was blind. No idea really.
A year ago (when I got a phone with a decent camera) I started taking pics of the dead animals I found out on my rides. OK, my kids think it's sick, but for me it's a sort of celebration of how beautiful they are
So far i have nice shots of...
a fox
a massive beetle
two moles
a gannet
3 rabbits
a housemartin and
an adder
