I have an edge 200 and use the breadcrumb trail quite alot it works well, although I do get a bit nervous when i really have no clue where I am and all I have is a little black line :-)

Once you get used to following the breadcrumb trail, it's usually spot on. I have done 300k no problems following the black line. You can add waypoints to beep up too.

I have a Touring Edge, great when I plan the routes and upload them to the Garmin, shocking bad when I let it choose. Also never ever let it recalculate a route for you. Ever.
I partly agree with this but maybe I use my Touring Plus a little differently.

Commuting to work is a good example. The best way for me to go is the shortest route. The Garmin wants to send me in a different direction on a route that's about a mile longer. From the ETA it shows I know I won't be later than that time (unforeseen incidents notwithstanding). About 1.5 miles in it recalculates to the correct route and I usually arrive 1 to 2 minutes before the ETA it now shows. I'm not using it for directions here, I'm just using it to see my ETA (and some other stats) and will put up with it not being great at the start.

I trust my Touring Plus to actually work out a route that gets me to my destination, it's just not always the best route. If I'm genuinely lost that'll do for me even if it takes me a mile or two out of the way.

If I'm going somewhere specific then I plan the route in advance, download it to the device and just follow that. On those occasions where I've let the Garmin chose the route it has done ok though.

Every night mine tells me to go down Hook St and usually I ignore it, carry on and it recalculates. Tonight I went down Hook St to take a scenic route. On reaching the other end of Hook St my Garmin advised me go back up Hook St!

It's been dying to go down Hook Street! Now it's thinking "ah, done it now, it wasn't anything special..."

or maybe it really enjoyed Hook Street and just wants you to go up and down it indefinitely!

@HelsBells Cambs since I am not rich and my Edge 500 was stolen (no not outside at home), I ended up with a edge 705 from ebay for £45, a new battery and mount (got a sram quarter turn out front mount an adaptor the 705 isn't a quarter turn by default) found out which firmwear worked best, it was good to go, I already had cad/sp hrm monitors.
It takes either tcx course files or gpx files for navigation, it can work out routes if need be, but I usually know where I am going if local, and future a field the route is planned usually with the course as I can use the vp thingy (usually get beat though) as for speed its nice to see (usually depressing though) but I tend to watch my cad more than speed, time to way points crs end eta ect have there uses, host of other stuff too.
The reason I went with a 705 apart from cost was the open file structure of tcx and gpx files.
