I still regret bailing LEL'13 at Thirsk. I probably wouldn't have got much further than Barnard Castle anyway considering how I was feeling and I knew where the station was in Thirsk, but it annoys me I didn't try.

OTOH The 'cloudy with a few light showers' forecast I had on 30th April when I was doing a DIY 300 turned out to be a series of hail-laden deluges which lead me to hide under a road bridge near Ecclefechan for 20 minutes at one point. Thankfully I didn't bail and was treated to a long lingering sunset along the Solway after the weather cleared, and completed the ride well within time

A few years ago I was touring in NZ. One easy day I did an out and back to a hot springs. About 25k there, steady gentle climb, 21 degrees and sunny. I did not have any kit with me, so the way back all downhill, 15 degrees and heavy rain was icier than I have ever experienced

Oh, has it been raining in England? I wouldn't know.... been in South Africa last week, cold and sunny. Better get the second best bike out then.

I've dipped out on a couple of quite long group rides, both times because I felt dreadful. I didn't feel it was fair to slow the other riders down, even though they would never have told me to give up. If you don't feel well on a ride, it probably isn't going to get any better later on.

If it rains when Im out it doesnt bother me but I dont like starting in the rain. If I was riding a 50km or more I would have gone home and had a coffee and let it pass. I ride for enjoyment. There is nothing enjoyable getting wet through at the start of a 50km ride if you can avoid it.

Bail is a sensible option , if you need it use . No one will think any worse of , its called self preservation and comes in handy for the next big one

Because I am cursed with a Y chromosome, I hate the feeling of bailing. So instead I plan rides with optional extensions. A fifty miler with optional extensions to 70, 80 and 100. Did the 80 mile version? That's not bailing out of a hundred, that's choosing to do the second longest of the optional extensions ...

Did a 56 mile solo ride on the last bank holiday Monday thought about cutting the distance a couple of times but didn't and I was so happy I hadn't even if my garmin failed to save the ride ( my longest to date) but I managed to upload it to strava anyway
