You can currently get a 7KG load Samsung ecobubble with 5 year warranty for £350 so why bother?

Don't get sucked in. Just buy a cheaper machine. Silly thing is, just how many programmes on a machine do you actually use ? We mainly use the synthetic (1 hour 10 mins) and the quick 40 minute wash 99% of the time !

1! Number 4, not a clue what it does other than shake the flat and make a racket while walking around the kitchen, but the clothes come out clean!

Do they really prevent lime scale build up or is it just a marketing ploy?

Yes they do. Copper was replaced by Nickel Alloy which is now in turn being replaced by Titanium in hard water areas for heating elements.
