In my experience, unless you are needing to respond to an attack, or make one, you dont need to be right at the front of the peleton. My local track training sessions finish off with a game of "devil takes the hindmost" (last person accross the line gets eliminated each lap....f**king hard!) ....brilliant for learning where you should and shouldn't be in a group....too far back and you are screwed, boxed in and you are screwed....you want to be within the first 1/4 of riders so you can jump onto the wheel of the rider who decides to pull out for the long sprint.

So yer.....if it isn't a race, just join the back and work your way up....or ask to move in!

that's what puts me off joining a club to be honest.
I haven't got that much time to go on club runs, but i'd be more inclined to make time if i knew they were friendly. Maybe i will make time to try out a nearby club run.

Just find a club and bite the bullet. They're full of normal people, just an average cross section of your standard bloke/woman on the street - some nice some perhaps not so. You're not REALLY bothered that there 'may' be someone who 'might' be not friendly to you surely?

Get stuck in, it's fun. The more you put if off the more you wished you cracked on with it......

I've been out with clubs a few times, but decided it wasn't for me. The clubs were happy to let me join in for a few rides though, I guess it's a sort of "try before you buy" approach.
Give it a go, it's not the end of the world if it doesn't work out.

hmmm... I might do in the winter.
This summer though I've entered EITHER a sportive or an audax on one of the weekend days, and since the other day is taken up by MTBing it doesn't leave any time to go on a club run.
You're right though it isn't anything to do with the fact they might be unfriendly, i don't know why i said that - after all like you say i can try it and just not go back if they're all arses, on the other hand they might be really sound.

You don't even need to wait that long because at the moment most clubs will be running an evening 10. You just have to turn up and do your ten miles at your own pace without worrying about anything. It's a great way to meet like minded folk and serves as a perfect low key introduction where you don't feel you have to prove yourself. If you think they're a bunch of tossers a least it's only cost you 2 hours of a Tuesday/Wednesday evening rather than a whole day being left for dust in the hills. I bet there's a club close enough for you to do a 10 this evening.
