Since having my new bike in April I have got more and more into cycling. My goal was never to lose weight that was just a bonus if and when it dropped off, I just wanted a nice bike to get to work on. The past 4 weeks I have lost a stone (from 19.2st) and my ride speed has increased quite dramatically.

Well now me and my brother will be doing a 100 mile ride from Bedworth to Long Sutton plus a few detours to bulk it up to that 100 . We decided to do this as a charity ride as my nan recently got diagnosed and treated for bowel cancer and the nurses have been brilliant.

Neither of us have done the distance before and both really looking forward to it. It isn't until April 2016 so plenty of time for me lose some weight and get some miles in.

Any personal experience and tips you have please feel free to share with me, even if its just silly little inventions you made they all help. I can read through articles all day long and they all say different things often contradicting themselves. I would much rather take in some advise from those that know.

Just wanted to tell you all lol . I am well looking forward to it.

My longest ride so far is 37miles. Doing my tuesday ride this week and have 6 others wanting to join me for it  although only the 1 usually turns up. Will aim to do 40+ this week. I have been trying to do 100miles a week and usually get near or over it.

Seems I will be reading endless amounts of threads and articles on this .

I think the most interesting bit will be cycling with my bro on the day because we haven't cycled out together before as he lives near where we are cycling to.

That's its slowly crank up the distance bit by bit but don't go mad you've plenty of time to get near the distance .Once you get to 60/70 miles the century is doable enjoy the training that's the important bit don't let it become a chore

If you can cycle through the winter regularly you should be fine. If you can get up to 70 or 80 miles you should be ok. Weather could be ropey in April so make sure you are prepared for that

I was talking about the weather to my other half this evening. Didnt really plan that part lol planned the date around my mums Birthday. The original ride plan that was 80 miles on my own , Then my brother wanted to do it with me then we decided we should do it for charity and round it to 100. I can cope with the cold . Its the April showers and potential head winds I gotta prep for.

Il aim for the 80 by Feb then.

The Glue that binds us together.
Just build up your miles, the more you do the better you feel, Eat and drink before you need it, go at your pace not someone else's pace. 100 miles may sound a lot but most people are capable of doing it, Just enjoy the ride, plan some nice routes rather than doing the same loop all the time.:okay:

The advice I'll offer is to eat and drink regularly. After a bit of trial and error, what works for me is making sure I drink at roughly 10 mile intervals and have a bite to eat at least every two hours.

I take a fairly ordinary packed lunch (except with two or three of everything for a ride that long) but I've borrowed some advice from Graeme Obree and take jam sandwiches which give a quick release of energy and sit easy on the stomach. I also tend to take a bag of jelly babies which is good for a boost late in the ride if needed.^_^

If you can get 75 or 80 miles done before the big day you'll manage fine.:okay:

Edit to add: Looking at the places you're riding between, you have a good chance of having a tail wind with the prevailing direction in this country. Fingers crossed! ;)

Do you stop off to eat a proper lunch mid way? Or just bit by bit all the way. I gotta sort a bag out for my front bars will be able to add phone charger in there too.

The jam sarnies seem a popular choice and cheap. Il try this out for sure.

My diet is pretty good once I cut all the junk food out. I eat plenty of fruit a day as its free at work and I like my bananas. Also my gf does slimming world so our main meals are always good. I defo should lose a bit more weight before.

I would say if you can do 40 at 19 stone then 100 at 13 would be a fiddle. Keep a calorie intake diary, the one I used was Myfitnesspal, I think.

Bit by bit all the way round for me.

In the past I've jokingly said I eat Hobbit style ^_^ but it's true. Breakfast before I go out at 7. Second breakfast around 9am, then elevenses, lunch about 1, afternoon tea at 3ish and finally something to tide me over for the last leg home.

Something I've found is that I need salt in the second half of the ride. My unsophisticated solution is to have a couple of bags of crisps in with the packed lunch(es). Other ways of getting this intake are available.

I started cycling in March of this year with the aim of trying to lose a little weight and maybe improve fitness levels.
I can only endorse what those far more experienced cyclist have already stated, and maybe just emphasise the importance of maintaining energy levels whilst venturing out on longer rides.Only you will be able to tell what works be it gels , flapjacks etc etc etc.

Oh yeah a decent pair of shorts and some of that anti chaffing cream around your undercarriage may help too!!!!

My miles have slowly but surely increased from literally a nervous trip around the block to 114 mile trip planned for this coming weekend.

Good Luck and all the best to Nan
