Hey guys I have the boardman 2013 limited edition carbon,

Now I confess to very little knowledge of what's good and what's not

Chose the boardman as from reviews and recommendations I came to the conclusion that for the money it's a very good bike

Anyway I've read many reviews and they all say that the shimano 105 derailer is great but should not of used the tiagra shifters but doesn't say why

Anyone know why?

There is very very little difference between both types of shifters. The 105 shifters are more aestetically pleasing as the cables run along the handlebars. They are probably a teeny weeny bit lighter too.

If someone is giving you other reasons I'd be inclined to take with a pinch of salt.

I have both types by the way.

Cheers mate, it's only that I've read reviews that say they shouldn't of used them but never gave a reason why, I'm perfectly happy with them, they seem to work fine

I have both. Not a problem with either one of them. As said, 105 looks cleaner without the cables sticking out the sides and the shifter bodies are a different shape. That's about it really.

Tiagra have got a window to tell you what gear your in. 105 doesnt?
Until last year tiagra was 9 speed. So my bike is 9 speed, but new tiagra is 10 speed, same as 105.
The window's a nice idea, just don't scratch it when you put your bike upside down!

Started young, and still going.

Barnet,
As above, just make sure the shifters are for the correct cassette size, ie. 9 or 10 speed they will work well.

I made this mistake!

I found that when I was deciding on a bike there was a huge following for 105 and not an awful lot of love for Tiagra (for no real reason other than cables), ended up going for Tiagra anyway and I'm glad I did, they work absolutely beautifully.

Tiagra's fine for shifting - except my hands are the wrong size to brake effectively from the hoods - 105 even worse!

I shall soon be all SRAM

I've heard you can adjust them slightly to suit smaller hands, but I have no idea how? (I have manhands, fortunately)

You can adjust them for smaller hands when on the drops but it does not really help when on the hoods .

I have Ultegra , 105 , Tiagra and Sora and I think that Tiagra shifts better on the L/H lever than all the others , maybe because the cable is external on Tiagra .
