I Anyway, even I have to admit it's not commercial, but as a die-hard dexy's/kevin fan, there is stuff on it I like....

I don't think it's bad at all. His version of "Rag Doll" is absolutely brilliant.

Yeah, I love that... and "This Guy's In Love" and "It's getting better"... but I can do without the "Labelled with Love" (a fantastic song originally, but the lyric change doesn't work for me) or "Long and Winding Road" and "You'll never Walk Alone" (both a bit hackneyed, I feel)...
Still, top singer.

Personally I always hated the original of "The long and winding road". Overblown rubbish and about six minutes too long.

Did anyone buy Smash Hits in the eighties? I remember the first copy I bought had a flexi disc of The Skids and XTC (another unsung band) stuck on the cover.

Smash Hits? They don't sound like the sort of bands you'd get on there. Sure it wasn't the Record Mirror or the Melody Maker?

smash hits was a decent mag which covered alternative stuff as well as mainstream up to about '84, when it got shite.
