And if the thread title had been "This privileged white man really does deserve a good slapping"?

You may question my use of "privileged" - a polite reference, where I come from, to guys in suits, with bow ties!

That's probably why he's on the train, not wanting to ride too far in his suit.

There's no mystery here: he got on a nearly empty train at waterloo, wanted to sleep, so settled in. It's not unreasonable to assume the 10.45 train won't fill up.

Pretty common on SWT for wide awake people at peak to not remove their bags from the seat beside them without being asked even when the train is so crowded passengers are being left on the platform.
But it's not reasonable to put your bike on the seats regardless of how empty the carriage is.
Because I don't agree with you.
You think that putting a bike on a seat is acceptable behaviour? Really? Ok then.

Personally I have no problem asking people to move belongings to make room, I've had them move bags to allow me to get my bike on too, and on occasion I've gently persuaded people to move themselves to make room for me and my brood.
You might enjoy having a whole table to yourself, I guarantee its not so great when I start plonking kids onto the empty seats :-)

"Londoners' Fury" said the headline .....Odd that nobody simply tapped him on the shoulder and said "excuse me". Bet the train was half empty when he got on and fell asleep.

Should he have put his bike on the seats?

Ultimately, if the comments about these trains not having any crew other than the driver on board are correct, then it's that penny pinching that caused the issue and more like it. There is no way the guard would have passed him and ignored the bike like that - he'd have been told to move it.

When I used to commute by train I've seen guards come through the train politely but firmly advising people to move their bags, coats etc as the service will be filling up at the next station. One guard regularly used to announce that passengers would be expected to buy a ticket for their bags if they insisted on taking up a seat with them.

It's a slightly dumb and rather odd thing to do but doesn't really warrant a slap. Also, the bike can't have been very stable like that, I'd have been worried about it tipping over.

I wish people would get even half as worked up at some of the far more moronic/ selfish places folks leave cars. On pavements, on corners, grass verges, blocking driveways/ cycle tracks / ASLs etc etc. Shouldn't really be surprised though this is Britain after all.

I regularly use the trains into surrey ex-waterloo, the guard often announces where they are situated on the train if needed

He's not in the right, but no, it's not the worst thing I have every encountered. It's not the worse thing I have encountered on public transport**. It's not the worst thing I have encountered on in London. It's not the worse thing I have encountered on a train. It's not the worst thing I have encountered on a train between Waterloo and Clapham Junction.

Can we raise the bar for internet pillorying a little higher?
