Maybe cycle shops should have an 'emergency lock' button behind the tills that locks the door and prevents shoplifters from running out with their stuff? It could work. though, the problem with that is the thief is now locked inside the store in agitated state as his escape route has been blocked and he'll most likely cause more damage to the property or merch in his attempt to escape.
Im not sure if bike shops have some sort of insurance that covers the more expensive bikes from theft while they are on the premises until the point the bikes are sold.

GCN Cycling even done a video on a 5-9K bike vs a 2K bike for commuting once.
Im sure somebody out there has enough disposable income to do it. With that said though, Ive seen a few people rolling around with very expensive BMC bikes in my part of town whilst at work.
