Maren Morris
My Church

It's clever song, as it sounds like a Gospel, but the radio is her altar

Two icons of the genre, two classic songs

When Hank Reads The Sermon
And Cash Leads The Choir
It Gets My Cold Cold Heart Burnin'
Hotter Than A Ring Of Fire

Dixie Chicks, again
Not Ready To Make Nice

Wrote upon their return/next CD, after the George W Bush debacle that saw them dropped by radio stations, & even receive death-threats
We saw them at Manchester Apollo, which was the venue, immediately before the comments were made

Forgive? Sounds good
Forget? I'm not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I'm still waiting
I'm through with doubt
There's nothing left for me to figure out
I've paid a price
And I'll keep paying

I'm not ready to make nice
I'm not ready to back down
I'm still mad as hell and
I don't have time to go 'round and 'round and 'round
It's too late to make it right
I probably wouldn't if I could
'Cause I'm mad as hell
Can't bring myself to do what it is you think I should

I know you said
Can't you just get over it?
It turned my whole world around
And I kind of like it
I made my bed and I sleep like a baby
With no regrets and I don't mind sayin'

It's a sad, sad story when a mother will teach her
Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they'd write me a letter
Sayin' that I better
Shut up and sing or my life will be over

I'm not ready to make nice
I'm not ready to back down
I'm still mad as hell and
I don't have time to go 'round and 'round and 'round
It's too late to make it right
I probably wouldn't if I could

'Cause I'm mad as hell
Can't bring myself to do what it is you think I should

(I'm not ready)I'm not ready to back down
I'm still mad as hell and
I don't have time to go round and round and round
It's too late to make it right
I probably wouldn't if I could
'Cause I'm mad as hell
Can't bring myself to do what it is you think I should
What it is you think I should

Forgive? Sounds good
Forget? I'm not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I'm still waiting

When my fist clenches, crack it open
Before I use it and lose my cool
When I smile, tell me some bad news
Before I laugh and act like a fool

And if I swallow anything evil
Put your finger down my throat
And if I shiver, please give me a blanket
Keep me warm, let me wear your coat

Banana, banana, banana, terracotta, banana, terracotta, terracotta pie! :notworthy:
I'm curious what you think that song is about.
Most people assume that because many songs are about the CIA and the US government they all are.
Holy Mountains is probably my favourite of their songs because there's a real sense of loss and anger in it (not surprising, given the subject matter)

I'm partial to this lyric in Aerials:

Life is a waterfall
We're one in the river
And one again after the fall

and how it's contrasted later:

Life is a waterfall
We drink from the river
Then we turn around and put up our walls

It's a slippery slope if we get into Country lyrics. We will get into this sort of thing:

She got the goldmine, I got the shaft.
One issue with C&W lyrics is how easily they are subverted:

My baby upped and left me
Stole everything I had
But I got a new pickaxe and
My lover's name is Chad

Another issue with C&W is how easily the lyrics can be made to fit Blues if you add "dun DUN dundun" after each line

'She walked in through the out door..' by Prince is one of my favourite song lines. Sums up such a lot about the subject of the song in a few words.

Ahh, the Snowman!!!

There's some good imagery in Country lyrics

I'll use the Dixie Chicks again, in 'Goodbye Earl' (about a wife-beater, who is eventually poisoned & disposed of)

She Finally Got The Nerve To File For Divorce
And Let The Law Take It From There
But Earl Walked Through That Restraining Order
And Put Her In Intensive Care

Plus.......... (long-haul flight at an odd hour, for holiday or work, anyone???)

iirc they said something about the 1st Gulf war being wrong, and that U.S Troops shouldn’t be there, the media whipped it up into a frenzy, idiots who thought they were against the military started burning cd’s in the streets, and got them banned by radio stations, when in reality they were against the military getting killed on the whim of politicians, they were eventually proved right, the song was about how it felt to be so badly treated.

Lyrics
Well I'll be damned
Here comes your ghost again
But that's not unusual
It's just that the moon is full
And you happened to call
And here I sit, hand on the telephone
Hearing a voice I'd known
A couple of light years ago
Heading straight for a fall
As I remember your eyes
Were bluer than robin's eggs
"My poetry was lousy, " you said
Where are you calling from?
A booth in the Midwest
Ten years ago
I bought you some cuff links
You brought me something
We both know what memories can bring
They bring diamonds and rust
Well you burst on the scene
Already a legend
The unwashed phenomenon
The original vagabond
You strayed into my arms
And there you stayed
Temporarily lost at sea
The Madonna was yours for free
Yes the girl on the half-shell
Could keep you unharmed
Now I see you standing
With brown leaves falling around
An' snow in your hair
Now you're smiling out the window
Of that crummy hotel over Washington Square
Our breath comes out white clouds
Mingles and hangs in the air
Speaking strictly for me
We both could have died then and there
Now you're telling me
You're not nostalgic
Then give me another word for it
You, who are so good with words
And at keeping things vague
'Cause I need some of that vagueness now
It's all come back too clearly
Yes I loved you dearly
And if you're offering me diamonds and rust
I've alredy paid

Surprisingly, no one appears to have nominated one of the most influential songs of the 20th century.

Southern trees bear a strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swingin' in the Southern breeze
Strange fruit hangin' from the poplar trees
Pastoral scene of the gallant South
The bulgin' eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolias sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burnin' flesh
Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather
For the wind to suck
For the sun to rot
For the tree to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop

It’s a very powerful song, the film about Billie Holiday was very good and well worth watching
