You're usually very helpful and clear in your advice to others Vickster. It's unusual to see you uncertain / indecisive.

Try turning the question round. "Why wouldn't you?"

You want it. You can afford it. You have room for it, or can make room for it. If it disappoints you can sell it on. If you don't like the components they can be changed.

Big decisions always involve compromises to a greater or lesser extent. You may remember I'm impatiently waiting for my first titanium bike from Reilly Cycleworks. Shortly after I ordered it Shimano released 12 speed Di2. I asked about changing my order, but it would be July or so for the 12 speed and I can get 11 speed now.

I'm playing with the idea of LEL. If I'm doing it I'll need the bike dialled in well beforehand, so don't think I can afford to wait for 12 speed.

I'm determined not to let any of that spoil my enjoyment of what for me is likely to be a 'once in a lifetime' bike.

I'm another voice for go for it.

A Ti bike that I used to lust after has appeared for sale in my size (I’m pretty sure having sat on one donkey’s year ago). It’s not a spec I would choose (10 speed ultegra triple), the bars are way too wide and stem will be too long. It’s also a 3 hour drive away so would need to be bought unseen!
I have a Ti bike, I have a loved steel bike with a very similar spec and I have two other bikes I barely use  Space is a consideration but manageable.

The actual paying for it is not an issue.

However, will I regret not buying, bearing in mind I’ve had an alert on this bike for at least 5 years?
Or will I regret buying As I may rarely use it and will need to spend a few quid getting it to spec?

what say y’all?

There are really only two questions to answer:

Do you want it?

Can you afford it?

If yes to both, what are you waiting for?

Indeed, I need to not get carried away! 🦄

I usually wait to the end of auctions for anything I'm really bothered about winning, then I'll decide whether or not to bid depending if I like the current price. I reckon too much early bidding activity shows more interest in item and can drive up the final price if a couple of muppets get drawn into a tit-for-tat bid war. So can having multiple watchers showing.
If it's an item with best offers invited I'll bid the start price to kill off the best offer option, then sit back and wait and see how it unfolds. Sometimes two almost identical items will sell for massively different prices simply because one listing attracts a couple of bidders who get carried away whilst completely ignoring another listing of the same item that appears after they have made bids.

No best offers or BIN, straight auction with a reserve. Which became clear as there was an accepted bid at lunchtime, subsequently retracted

Why would someone need to retract a bid on a reserve price auction? If the reserve is not met, then it's meaningless unless the seller subsequently reduces the reserve.
Personally I don't bid on reserve auctions, as I believe the start price should be the reserve price and I won't entertain sellers who play silly games with a low start price then hide behind a reserve.

They must have met the reserve with that bid. I’ve now bid the same and met the reserve.
How would I know why someone has retracted a bid

I suppose putting a bid in then retracting it might be a ploy to find out what figure the reserve was set at. A bit naughty really if that's the case, but then eBay is really a bit of a charade as bidding is not rigidly enforced as a legal contract like it is in real face to face auctions.

Could be his better half (wife*) found out and said NO we need a new ...................... before Christmas. I've heard of such things happening

* it doesn't have to be a Wife, could be a significant other or his husband.
