Really great effort and result for Ben Swift, a real "coming man", who has the potential to deliver some superb results in the next few years.
As to Cav carrying on, why should anyone who knows the sport need to ask? It's a hard man's business, and Cav is a hard man. He knows, like everyone who has raced at a high level, that in a stage race a sprinter is likely to have at least one tarmac excursion, and needs to be able to recover and deliver the win a few days later, so it's all just conditioning for a race of more than five days, really. And the wounds heal better for racing if they are stretched, and not allowed to tighten up.

I wonder if it could possibly be because they are learning about the sport and would like to be told in a less patronising way from someone who clearly knows it all?

Orrr if he abandoned, he'd just go out cycling while he was hurting anyway, so he might aswell do it in a peloton of people, rather than fly home and do it on his own.

We'll never know.

Well, back in San Luis, veteran Marco Arriagada of Team Chile held off Serpa and others from the big European teams for the overall, and there were plenty of good performances from younger South American riders too.
