It's illegal because it's dangerous.

It is not dangerous to run through a tackle, but dangerous to jump over it?

I suppose there is the possibility of kicking the tackler in the head as you attempt it, but surely they could just apply similar rule there to the rules they apply for head contact in tackles?

Though in this case, he wasn't jumping over the tackle anyhow, he was jumping away from it. Which is why Nigel Owens thought it might be accepted.

Incidentally, I would say Scotland were exactly "dreadful" in the second half. There was some exceptional goal line defence from Wales, including twice holding your player up over the line.

Totally different running through a tackle to jumping through one, which is what the player did.

Rightly ruled out. Shame though because it was brilliantly worked otherwise.

And yet vdM is lauded (rightly IMO) for the athleticism of his dives over cover tackles for the corner flag. Am puzzle, as so often.
Actually, having looked it up after seeing your comment, the rulebook doesn't have anything in it regarding jumping over or through a tackle as such.

It is all about whether it is considered to be dangerous or reckless as to danger.

What World Rugby say regarding the diving is “In principle, in a try scoring situation, if the action is deemed to be a dive forward for a try, then it should be permitted. If a player is deemed to have left the ground to avoid a tackle; or to jump, or hurdle a potential tackler, then this is dangerous play and should be sanctioned accordingly.”

In other statements, they seem to suggest that they think jumping to avoid or hurdle a tackler is always dangerous. Personally, I disagree with that stance. If (as in this case), they are jumping away from the tackler, then I don't see where there is any element of danger.

But if World Rugby say it is always dangerous, then the refs are going to go with it always being illegal.

Proper demolition job by France today, very pleasing that it was in Ireland too.

We were dreadful in the second half against Wales, the subs killed all our rhythm, momentum and shape. Had their disallowed try stood I think we'd have ended up losing because the wind was very much in Wales' sales.

Wales have been so much better in the last two games, better balanced and more confident. It would have been a real scrap had the try been given but Scotland were worthy winners. The Scotland backline is superb, I really like watching Jones and Jordan has done well. Wales have a chance of salvaging their season by beating England in Cardiff next week.
