Came across this tonight. Easy to get lost in there.

“The Perimeter is a photography project by Quintin Lake based on walking 11,000km around the coast of Britain in sections. The journey started on 17th April 2015 at St Paul's Cathedral and I'm following the coast clockwise. I finished on 15th September 2020.”

How would you decide where the coast starts and finishes at estuaries and the like? It can't be just bridges, as some of them are too far inland.

It's a bit more complicated than that...

Unless something's changed recently I don't even think St Paul's Cathedral is on the coast

From his rules: https://theperimeter.uk/rules/

"3. I’ll take bridges over rivers where they have a pedestrian walkway.

6. No vehicles. I’ll walk every step of the way. This means no boats or ferries across rivers and estuaries. This adds significant distance to the route due to lengthy inland detours to the first crossing point especially in Devon & Cornwall."

So yes, he has to go a long way inland. Following these rules means that he's got to cross the Thames Estuary at Tower Bridge, as it's the first pedestrian-friendly bridge. So in theory he could have started at the Tower of London. But St Paul's is only another mile west, and the symbolism (Paul was a famous traveller, it's a public building) is better. He's also added in ascents of the three high points of England, Scotland and Wales.
