Once every Preston Guild
is a Lancashire expression meaning 'very rarely'.
Preston Guilds take place once every twenty years. Preston is on the River
Ribble (north-west of England) and nearly all end-to-end (LEJOG/JOGLE) routes got through the city. Preston was granted the right to hold a Guild Merchant in 1179: this meant that only Guild members could ply their trade in the town. Membership was updated from time to time, and from 1542 it was decided that once every twenty years was sufficient for this administrative task. Nowadays it's used as an excuse, were one needed, for general city festivities, the last one being 2012. Since the Guild did not meet in 1942 (during WW2) I assume that they started the current 20 year cycle from 1952.
