Dont know about the moon but you are wrong about the sun! It only sets in the (exact) east in twice a year.

In winter it sets more round to the south and then through spring it moves a bit north each night past east up to a point around north-east. This point will depend on how far north you are.

If you a long way north, say the top of Norway, the sun "sets" so far north that it misses the horizon (earth) and just goes round again.

So why bother with the whole phases thing?

And how do they work the tides? I reckon it's because the Earth moves. If you move a basin of water then the water sloshes back and forth. It must be the same with tides. Only slower.

I've never moved a basin of water. The illuminati work the tides. Eveyone knows that.

In Australia, the moon is upside down!

Well, looking at this photo, it's more on its side....

Still looks a bit odd though!

And also in Australia (well, the whole Southern hemisphere, actually) the sun traverses the sky right to left looking north towards the equator (or where it would be).

One more useless piece of info about the monn, on a full moon on a clear night it can only reflect 7% of the suns light.

Anyway. In 2 billion years the moon will have moved too far away to provide this service and then we die.

I thought this thread was going to be about the fact that if you now when the moon is rising and falling, in other words when it is rotating around the earth and past your house in an East to west direction then, you could jump on you bike and pedal down the road in the same direction as the moon and its gravitational pull would pull you along or at least make your ride easier!
