I personally preferred The Jam but recognise The Clash as a great band....they just weren't my thing, though I did like a couple of tracks.

Sorry to be a bit of an grumpy old sod here but you really don't need to have a preference. It's perfectly acceptable to like both bands (or neither!) equally for different reasons, they might both fulfil different needs. One doesn't always need to decide something!

No it's not. It's a sure sign of wanting to be killed.

The jam for me,it represents an era,and also a fashion with two tone drainpipes and jackets, also a dance style.I never really listened to the clash.

The Jam.

I just really hope they do not reform and do a tour because Buckley and Foxton are a bit broke:sad:

Is that Tim or Jeff Buckley?

I used to worship the Jam in my youth but now I find them unlistenable - far to earnest and angst-ridden.

Having said that, I think 'Going Underground' was the greatest No1 of the eighties and I still jump around when it comes on the radio

Damn fine bass player, though, to give the be-mulleted one his due...

Yes. Used to drive Weller barmy. There he was, uber-cool, modster, as sharply dressed as a razor after being sharpened by the Koh-i-noor.

Weller tired way too hard to look 'hip' and usually ended up looking like a tit.

Buckler had it right and didn't look like he was trying. MA1 pilot jacket, Lonsdale, Levi's, boxing boots. When he did wear a suit he always looked better than Weller. Remember the tiny 'lozenge' shades?

The Clash are a bit like Pink Floyd to me. I quite like some of their songs but I don't understand the devotion of their fans.

the music of the clash transcends its era better imho. the jam's legacy is also slightly tainted by weller's post-jam output, not to mention the fact that he seems a bit too far up his own arse for my liking.

both greats though.

Great read through all the comments, this one is nearest to my opinon, I would like to add that, post both bands in interview Weller always comes accross as a pompus Arse and Strummer managed to maintain an air as if he didn't really care too much! Then of course he went and died which never does an old rocker's image any harm!
;)

Thanks for the enjoyable read.

I have to disagree. I think Weller has got better and better as both Songwriter and performer and works hard at his craft. The Style Council were fun and a good way to break from the style of the Jam. As a solo artist Wild Wood, Stanley Road and Heavy Soul are magnificent albums and the others (and there is a lot of them) are goodies too. Weller still performs well live, with passion and venom as if they're songs he wrote in anger yesterday. 30 years of class output is pretty good.
The Clash were great and of their time, but that was it. They were up their arses too in their day.
Weller doesn't enjoy the limelight, he seems quiet and introspective, letting the music do the talking.
He rides a Condor...

The Clash for me, tho after london calling it was a tough lp to follow.

Taking the biscuit
The Clash had the style and ideology I preferred, The Jam had sharper and more technical songs, I'm torn.

'Rock The Kasbah'(a saving grace, post London Calling)wins hands down over 'Down In A Tube Station etc' for me tho.

Ok put me down for The Clash.
Any love for Weller in me was killed when my big brother bought 'Long Hot Summer' and played it over and over and etc. for half of the '83 summer hols.

There's a coincidence, Bruce Foxton has expressed his mullet for SLF too!
So thats one member from each playing for SLF, who also put on a good live show.
