Weak neck muscles and the extra weight of the helmet making it difficult to keep his head up ? A large basket on the front might have stopped him sooner.

Maybe I'll revise my plans to buy a cycle computer.....
I can't see how the helmet helped him in any way, not least by removing his peripheral vision. On the other hand, as he was completely unaware until the moment of impact, he was relaxed when he hit, which probably helped quite a lot.
It's easy to laugh, but if he's that easily distracted on a form of transport where he will always come off worst, I shudder to think what he's like when surrounded in the cocooned multimedia distractions of a car....

I'm not impressed with the checking of the condition of his bike after the collision, particularly when appears to avidly checking the front wheel beforehand,,!
