The reason they tell you to keep the windows closed during the day is that the air outside is hotter. This is the inside & outside temp at my house:

Talking to my mutt's groomer yesterday, she told me she's going to close on Monday and Tuesday. She's cancelled all appointments for those two days. She said the temperature in the shop, if she opened, would be higher than it was last Monday when it reached 32C/92F, with all the heat coming from the hair dryers (sometimes 3 going at the same time) and the dog shower and that could affect the dogs. Maybe leading to compensation claims filed against her.

Let's declare a national emergency because it's going to be a little bit warm for a day or two in London!
Predicted temperatures warmer than have ever been recorded in the UK isn't "a little bit warm".

When we were in Crete a few years ago and the temperature hit 41C, all the locals were complaining about the heatwave. And that is what is predicted for the South East on Monday - a temperature that would be considered a heatwave in the Med.

We are not having the same problem in Denmark. But the company I work for would be jumping through hoops. When it heats up we always get ice cream and cold bottles of water. Electric fans at our work stations and can take break whenever we want.

I rest my case, re NATIONAL emergency. Would a weather warning for the affected area not have been enough?

My post above may have been slightly tongue in cheek and I'm not making light of the dangers hot weather poses to some vulnerable people, but those same risks apply at 30 degrees.

It's just this constant dramatisation of everything by the media that becomes very wearing, especially when it doesn't apply to the vast majority of people.

Use common sense (but there lies the problem with modern society, they need to be taken by the hand), stay out the sun where possible, wear appropriate clothing, slap on the sunscreen, and drink plenty fluids. No need for a national emergency, surely?

BBC reporting this mornings its going to be felt right up to Leeds and Manchester, so its (probably) going to be really quite widespread.
I work in a chilled environment so am lucky in that sense...i will be watching out for mum though.

I'm going to go with the Met Office saying it's a red alert rather than a cyclist on the internet saying it's not an emergency.

We just aren't used to this heat. Tarmac will melt. Railway lines might buckle.
The heat could well knock out infrastructure. It's not been designed for these conditions.

I might go to the cinema to get out of the heat. It's at the coast too so always breezy.

And I'd rather be forewarned than not. So I can plan to walk the dog early rather than forcing him into the heat.

Apparently these events will go up by 1 degree every decade now so it's only going to get worse in the future.

Global warming, not long before the UK adopts the southern European work timetable. Siesta and evening meals from 9pm after 8pm finish, that's how they handle the heat.

Is it a national emergency though. Given that they started out with just the southeast being affected by it.

We'd 32°C for over half of last week, no warning issued.

Five months from now, there'll be folk saying it's cold, and half an inch of snow will bring one tiny part of this island to a near standstill.
Maybe we should accept that Summers might be warm and Winters will be cold.

The only thing is that we don't get long periods of consistent weather. Blooming freezing out in my garden at 8 last night. Only 18 out there now - it's not Spanish weather.

Up to 2000 excess deaths predicted so I wonder what the fatality threshold is before we admit that things might be a little on the extreme side. I guess many fewer than that and we can say it's an egregious overreaction.
